Phonological & Phonemic Awareness
This is the time of year where I really start to ponder all the ways that I can help my struggling kinders with beginning reading skills through phonological and phonemic awareness activities.
I've tried many different ways to help them, but I'm always looking for new ways. I reread many of my educational books and search online for ways to get these kiddos moving forward. I've included some of the blogs that I've used recently.
If you haven't come across Carleen Paul's blog Solutions for Struggling Readers, I highly recommend that you check it out. In her posts she writes about different ways to help students learn to read.
Mrs. Ricca's Kindergarten: Sound hop, Tap light segmenting, Slinky stretch, Heads shoulder, knees and toes for sounds, Race Car Segmenting, Elkonin
Boxes, and Songs & Chants.
Confessions of A Homeschooler: Beginning sound
games and for those looking for letter activities, she
has a ton of examples.
Make Take and Teach: Shares many ways to help
students build phonological and phonemic
awareness. She has wonderful kits for purchase with a ton of activities. One kit that I have purchased to use with my students is her Phonemic Awareness kit.
Little Minds at Work:Check out her fun activities on phonemic awareness.

There is so much out there to help students learn. These are just a few of the resources that I have used to help my own students be successful.

Apple Picking Time
I love this time of year here in Maine. Our apple orchards opened up last weekend and got me in an apple frame of mind for school. I will be starting my apple unit this coming week. Because my kindergarten curriculum is so chalked full with Everyday Math and Teacher's College Reading and Writing Workshop I love just spending some time getting my kids excited about about science and social studies.
This is where my two week apple unit comes in. I've created ten lessons and activities to help teach my little ones about the apple. Here are just a few examples from my last year kiddos.

Two New Math Products
I just uploaded two new math activities to my teachers pay teachers store.
The first one is a bundle of activities to help students learn understand those tricky teens. All activities in the bundle follow the understanding that teens numbers are ten plus ones. I have found that my kindergartners are slowly catching on to concept each time we use one of the activities. It is a hard concept for them to grasp. But the activities that I put together to help them learn this concept is making a difference. Maybe it will help your students too.
Activities Included
Centers or Small Group Activities:
* Making Teens with Tens & Ones
* Teen Number Sequence Puzzles
* Tricky Teens Card Pick and color
* Write the room double ten frames
* Tricky Teens Bingo
* Tricky Teens memory game
* Tricky Teens Domino Match
* Spin and Color with Tricky Teens
Worksheets:
* Circle the Correct Tricky Teen
* Building Tricky Teens Blank Number Chart
* Match the Tricky Teens to the Correct bundle
Pocket Chart Activity
* Ways to show teen numbers
You can check it out HERE
My second product goes along with our Everyday Math curriculum. A fun Thanksgiving themed math center activity that has my students practicing extending a pattern and labeling what type of pattern it is during my math center time.
You can check it out HERE

Freebie: Halloween Tricky Teens Number Puzzle Sequence
My kindergarteners have been working on learning all about those tricky teens. So as one of their math tub stations I wanted them to get the extra practice and putting them in order. I could have just used simple number cards, but hey, Halloween is just around the corner and I wanted them to have fun sequencing tricky teens.
I was just going to make Halloween themed flashcards for them to use. That would make it hard for them to self check their work. Then I thought, I'll created a Halloween tricky teens number puzzle sequence. Not only does it give them practice with ordering tricky teens, but they can self check by creating an image! And you can grab it for free. Just click on the image to grab it!
Happy Halloween!!
